Freudenberg Medical Expands Operations in Costa Rica and California
Freudenberg Medical, a global contract design and manufacturing provider to the medical device and biopharma industry, has expanded cleanroom operations in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The expansion project added a new ISO Class 7 cleanroom for catheter manufacturing and assembly, molding, extrusion, and packaging operations. New manufacturing technology was added including an advanced thermoplastic extrusion line that can produce tubing from 4 inches to 170 inches long with a capacity of up to 1 million parts per month, plus additional injection molding machines.
“Costa Rica has grown as an important medical device cluster in recent years and Freudenberg Medical is part of that story,” said Dr. Mark Ostwald, CEO of Freudenberg Medical. “Freudenberg’s FDA-registered cleanroom operation is located in the Coyol Free Zone, a business park that is a central hub for life science companies and medical device OEM manufacturing sites. In order to keep pace with rapid business growth, Freudenberg Medical has decided to increase its capabilities and capacity for catheter manufacturing, medical tubing, and injection molding.
Additionally, Freudenberg Medical has expanded injection molding operations at its Baldwin Park, California operation which is focused on thermoplastic components and in-vitro diagnostic products. Freudenberg Medical Baldwin Park has added 6 injection molding machines including 3 new Arburg molding machines, a work cell for two-shot molding and a Wittmann Battenfeld micro molding machine with in-process visual inspection capability. The machines range in size from 15 to 110-ton.
“These added machines will support component production for in-vitro diagnostic test kits for our international customers,” said Sven Rosenbeiger, Vice President and General Manager GBU Thermoplastics. “Freudenberg Medical is a leading provider of IVD product manufacturing and two-component molding solutions in the U.S. market. Our two-shot processing can help streamline manufacturing, reduce SKUs, improve part quality, and reduce costs.”
