Two-Shot Molding
Advanced 2K Molding and Bi-Component Solutions
Freudenberg Medical delivers high-precision two-shot molding (also known as 2K molding, 2C molding, or bi-component molding) for the medical device and diagnostics industry. This sophisticated process enables the combination of two different materials or colors into a single component, offering design flexibility, enhanced performance, and cost efficiency.
As a global leader in molding technologies, Freudenberg Medical manufactures over 80 million custom-molded components annually, including silicone, thermoplastic, and 2C components, supporting applications in IVD, biopharma, and complex medical devices.
Why Choose Two-Shot Molding?
Two-shot molding solves complex medical design challenges by integrating multiple material properties into one part.
This eliminates the need for assembly, reduces the number of SKUs, and improves overall part quality. Instead of building and validating two separate molds, a single 2K process saves capital investment, time, and operational complexity.
Key Advantages of Two-Shot / 2C Molding:
- Lower total cost with fewer parts
- Reduced handling, assembly and manual labor
- Fewer defects and contamination risks
- Strong chemical and mechanical bonding between materials
- Enhanced part functionality and aesthetics
- Simplified supply chains with reduced SKU count
- Improved throughput with shorter cycle times
- Waste reduction with hot runner compatibility

Where Two-Shot Molding Adds Value
Two-shot molding is ideal for applications where different functional characteristics are required in a single part. For example, a device housing may need both impact resistance and a soft, grippable surface. Other examples include syringe seals, multicolor parts, flexible hinges, and strain-relieved connectors.
Typical medical applications include: soft-touch grips and ergonomic housings; IVD cartridges with integrated seals; syringe piston seals; luer connectors and strain reliefs; stopcocks with molded-in rotational elements; manifolds for pharmaceutical filling lines; components requiring flexible hinges, seals or vibration damping.
Material and Bonding Expertise
Freudenberg Medical specializes in advanced two-shot molding processes using a wide range of compatible material combinations, including thermoplastics, silicones, and elastomers. Our engineers work closely with customers to select the best pairings to ensure optimal performance and long-term durability.
For assemblies requiring mobility or disconnects such as stopcocks, our engineers may intentionally select incompatible material combinations to enable in-mold articulation without secondary assembly steps.
Common Material Combinations:
- Polycarbonate + TPE
- Silicone + Thermoplastic
- Silicone + Silicone
- Polypropylene + TPE
- TPU (Aromatic) + TPU (Aliphatic)
- PCTG + TPE
Bonding Techniques Include:
- Chemical compatibility selection
- Mechanical interlocks
- Surface treatments (plasma, wet chemistry)
- Intermediate bonding layers
Our Process and Infrastructure
Freudenberg Medical operates with advanced two-shot molding systems that include rotating cavity plates, multi-barrel injection platforms, and in-line vision inspection for precision manufacturing. We also integrate hot runner systems to reduce waste and maximize efficiency. Digital modeling and simulation tools, including digital twin technologies, are used to optimize designs and validate high-pressure performance before tooling begins. Our facilities are ISO 13485-certified and include class 7 and 8 cleanrooms for molding, assembly, and packaging.
