Medical Coatings
Freudenberg Medical is a leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for drug-device combination products (DDCP), specialty coated medical devices and components, and functional coatings including hydrophilic coatings.
With a proven track record backed by more than 25 years of 360° expertise, we provide advanced coating design, product and process development, regulatory strategy, and volume production of DDCP and specialty coated components.
Consistency and Reliability.
Guaranteed.
Medical device companies often struggle to achieve reliable, uniform coatings that enhance performance without compromising biocompatibility or durability. Balancing regulatory requirements, precision application, and long-term adhesion, especially on complex geometries, can present significant technical and manufacturing challenges.
Drug-Device Combination Products
Our coatings reliably and precisely deliver a wide range of active pharmaceutical ingredients with a specified release profile that ensures optimal clinical performance.
We have extensive experience in customization and volume production of DDCP such as drug eluting stents, drug coated balloons, drug delivery coatings of non-vascular implants and devices.

Drug Delivery Coatings
Playing a vital role in implants and biosensors by enabling localized, controlled release of therapeutic agents directly at the target site, for example for cochlear implants that improves hearing for patients who suffer from severe hearing loss from inner-ear damage.
The application of suitable drug delivery coatings can improve efficacy and reduce systemic side effects. These coatings must be precisely engineered to maintain biocompatibility, ensure adhesion to device surfaces, and achieve consistent release profiles over time.

Hydrophilic Coating Solutions
Our advanced UV hydrophilic coating technology is designed to reduce surface friction and deliver exceptional lubricity for minimally-invasive medical devices. A single-step coating process ensures precise control of coating thickness for superior durability and uniformity. Benefits include low particle generation in the human body as well as long-lasting wetting that improves navigability and reduces patient trauma.
The choice is yours: You can either purchase the coating from us as a powder or solution and apply it to your devices in-house, or we can coat them for you at one of our facilities in the U.S., Ireland, or Germany. Royalty-free models and rapid feasibility studies ensure shorter development times and complete cost control. Technical services round out our offering and guarantee efficient production throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Surface Modifications
We tailor surface properties of medical devices and components to our customers’ needs. Properties include:
- Wettability
- Reduced friction
- Anti-tack
- Controlled drug release
We utilize various technologies to achieve our aims. This includes altering surface coatings, physically (e.g. microstructuring); additive processes that modify surface (e.g. plasma treatment), and also coating & finish (dipping, spraying, and the proprietary drop-drag-coating processes).

Custom Coating
The excipient and drug coating formulation that we develop inhouse is protected by our intellectual property, undergoing significant testing and multiple production phases in their development.
Additional patents and team knowledge accrued over more than 25 years, help provide peace of mind to customers utilizing our technology.
Automation
We have developed best-in-class coating machines that use automated elements to ensure consistency, precision and reliability for our customers. This includes the software used, and, where needed, we can calibrate coating settings to ensure repeatability.
Our extended team across Europe and the US is trained to meet exacting standards required to meet customer expectations. Managing this process inhouse ensures time-to-market is accelerated and mitigates supply chain issues.
